The Roost

Finally, I get to review one of my favorite dishes.... fried chicken.  I like to consider myself a connoisseur and make a point to try every restaurant's take on this greasy delight.  While we were walking to Fulton Market we stumbled upon a small shop I had never heard of called The Roost.  Located in River West neighborhood of Chicago, it had all the promise of being my next new place.  The restaurant was packed, with an open kitchen that allowed you to enjoy the aroma and watch the masters at work.  Menu was full of all the southern charms: mac and cheese, coleslaw, and fresh lemonade.  Unfortunately, this is where the joy ended :(

We waited over 30min for a chicken sandwich.  They appeared to be backed up by grub hub and catering orders, as I frequently saw delivery bikers coming in/out picking up large bags of food.  The server appeared to forget my lemonade as I had to go back and remind her.  Albeit, everyone was very nice and I did not feel I was a bother.

Roost's interior is extremely small as the kitchen takes up the majority of the shop, and a few window tables are available (not really meant for dining in).  There are also a few places to sit outside.  On this particular day it was >100degrees outside, and the only opportunity to cool off is a small fan sitting by the register (no air-condition).  If you are planning to venture, you may be better off just having it ordered to your home.

I ordered my sandwich on a buttermilk biscuit with "the works" (chipotle ranch, dill pickle, cucumber coleslaw, cheese).  It was very messy, but I expect that.  The chicken was dry, and the seasoning not very exciting.  My lemonade was refreshing, but didn't quite relieve me from the outside heat and disappointing flavor.  Roost classifies themselves as "Carolina Chicken".  I am not as familiar with this particular style, and it may have played a role in my distaste.
