Vintage Movie Roundup

Annie and I have been on a binge of some old classic films.  We both discussed how we had always heard about these movies, but never actually seen them.  It was fun to see what we were, and weren't missing.

The Graduate

Given the time this movie was released, I'm surprised it wasn't X-rated.  A very racy film, with a scandalous story-line, about an older woman seducing a newly graduated man.  I felt it was interesting, and invented some unique cinematography techniques.  I had never seen Dustin Hoffman in that light, and it was special to see his big break.  The storyline is erratic, and left me confused throughout - which isn't necessarily a bad thing.  Provoking thought is extremely important in art.  I didn't like it as much as I thought I would, but understand why everyone was obsessed with Simon and Garfunkel.  The music could not have been more perfect for the style of the film.

Rumor Has It

An early Jennifer Anniston film, based on the idea The Graduate was a true story.  The concept of the film is Anniston's mom and grandma were the women of The Graduate, and both slept with Dustin Hoffman's character.  A great idea for a story, and a must see after watching The Graduate.  However, the movie is awful.  Filled with subpar acting, and a story-line loaded with potential that just never gains steam.

The Birdcage

Another iconic role for the great Robin Williams.  Birdcage was ahead of it's time and a statement film for the gay community.  The message of being yourself, and being proud where you came from stood out to me.  Nathan Lane is a scream, and the movie has a lot of comedic relief, while highlighting the misconceptions and stereotypes of the homosexuality.  Overall it was okay.

When Harry Met Sally

An early Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan movie.  The first word that comes to mind with this film is pure.  It felt very relatable and real, exploring the intricacies of love and the relationship between the male and female sexes.  I enjoyed the writing, and believe it is Meg Ryan's best performance.  I don't see this movie as some legendary piece, but I felt it was very well done.  When Harry Met Sally provides great life lessons, and is deeper than first look.  I plan to watch again in the future.
