Burger King
My first post ever is about.... burgers. I don't by any means consider myself a burger connoisseur, but I do thoroughly enjoy the sandwich. Something nostalgic about grilled beef, takes me back to summer barbecues as a child. With Memorial day having just past, and 4th of July around the corner what better review to start with than an American hamburger.
Although Chicago is not a burger capital of the world, it does rest home to some of the best. My favorite in particular (both in the city and overall) is Au Cheval. It has been number one since I moved to Chicago and sits a top of numerous famous lists (just google it!). There have been many to put it to the test, but none come close. With thick cut bacon, a fried egg, and meat cooked to perfection it is the definition of a gourmet burger! The unfortunate drawback to this burger heaven is they do not take reservations and the wait is typically 3hrs. So get there early, or be prepared to explore the West Loop while you wait.
Then the buzz started. A new burger king in town: The Loyalist. I must admit I was drawn by the Instagram pictures, Zagat reviews and rumors amongst fellow Chicagoans. I had to try it. So what better time than for my birthday. My wife surprised me with a few friends and made a reservation for Tuesday May 15. This turned out to be the perfect day because on Tuesdays you get a beer, a shot, and the burger all for $16!
Onto the review. The burger was good, but not great. I felt it was messy, a little smoky, and slightly undercooked. The flavors worked well, but didn't quite make it. The bun was flat, but the sesame seed was a nice touch. I wanted to love it, but I didn't. What really stole my heart were the fries. They were crispy, thick cut, and served with vinegar and a garlic aioli. I would rank them high on my french fry list, but that's for another review. Albeit, the table's opinion was the exact opposite for the burger. Everyone else at the table felt it was the better than Au Cheval (including my wife!) and agree with a new king taking the throne! So don't take my word for it, get over to the West Loop and try for yourself :)
