Gut Punch
Yes I know this blog doesn’t have a spot for this particular topic but it’s my blog and I do what I want. It’s going into sport because my stomach was a punching bag.
Been pretty absent from posts this week and much of that was do to a virus I caught. I would like to start by saying it was the worst illness I’ve suffered in my life, and I missed work for the first time in my career. Below is what to expect and tips for survival.
Round 1: Fever, chills, repeat. This goes on throughout the first 48hrs. Be prepared to have clothes ready because it will happen quickly and if you don’t acclimate it will exacerbate the condition. Side note, if you wake up in a pool of sweat despite being minimally dressed it’s a good thing - the virus is breaking aka you’re winning :)
Round 2: Severe low back pain. Also goes for the first 48hrs making it near impossible to find a comfortable position and limiting sleep. There’s no cure for this because it’s the virus targeting the joints. Some suggestions are to do cobras (lie on stomach, press up from floor, extend back), walk around, and place a pillow b/t your legs or cross them.
Round 3: Skip this round if your squeamish. I repeat skip this round if your squeamish. DIARRHEA! All the time. Tips are to be near a toilet and (this ones important) TAKE IMODIUM! Hydrate as much as you can and stick to the BRAT diet of things like toast, bananas, rice, and applesauce. It lasts about 5-7days. I gave up on the diet after the fever/chills and low back pain ceased, this was a bad decision. Stick to it until you know you are better.
Round 4: Mike Tyson punches. Every time you feel you are doing better, get ready for a nice gut buster to assure you the virus is still alive and kicking. Tips are ibuprofen but make sure to have something in your stomach or it will make you feel worse.
Final round: I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy and hope no one I know gets it. But if you do you are in my prayers and use these instructions to survive the battle.
Time expected to miss work: I took 2 half days... big mistake. Just plan on taking 2 days off right away. Take 3 to be safe. Rest is one of the most important factors (as it typically is with an illness).
