EVERYTHING IS LOVE
There’s only one thing that could take me away from Yeezy Season and that is an album by Beyoncé or Jay-Z. There’s only one thing that can completely eclipse Yeezy Season and that is a joint album of Jay-Z and Beyoncé. The 2 did just that when they surprised fans at a concert in London and once again broke the internet.
Beyoncé is no stranger to releasing albums without notice. And although there has been much speculation over the last few years if the power couple would ever release something, we have finally been blessed. The album lives up to the hype and has great playability.
Let’s just start by saying it’s the ultimate flex. They didn’t need to do this. They have nothing to prove. But they did, and manage to show how they can literally do nothing wrong musically. The two (as always) compliment each other perfectly and blend hip hop with r&b, soul, and jazz. Many great producers contributed, as well as features from Pharrell, Ty Dolla $ign, and Migos.
A nice surprise was Beyoncé’s ability to flip between her soulful voice, and also being an MC. She consistently shows off a rapping prowess, something I’ve only heard a few times. I must say she’s really good. Her flow is smooth, and it’s blissfully nostalgic hearing her use a few famous hip hop samples on 713 (citing Dr. Dre's "Still Dre"), as well as HEARD ABOUT US (citing Biggie's "Juicy").
HOV will always be one of the greatest rappers to me. Both in presentation and lyrically overall he just has it. And this album is no different. Using his rhymes to raise political awareness, flex his fame and power, and inspire. He also takes a few shots at Kanye (see track "Boss"), squashing any dreams we had at a Watch The Throne II happening.
Although there are times the album is a little overkill on “we’re so awesome”, “we love each other”, “nothing can stop us” BS, it still meets expectations and is worth the listen. I feel there are many songs I will be playing the rest of the summer for all different occasions. One occasion specifically being to see them in concert! So go enjoy the current music royalty.
Yes.... They shot their video for Apeshit at the Louvre Art Museum in Paris. Flex Level = 100
