Yo Mama
My first 3 reviews have all been novels. I would like to proudly announce, not all will be this way. Including this one.
Over the weekend Annie (my wife) and I went to an Italian restaurant in River North called Mama's Boy. We had passed it many times, and heard some buzz here and there so figured we would give it a try. It was easy to get a reservation, and located close to our apartment. They are owned by the Rosebud company, which is typically known for good quality food in the city.
The food was adequate. Not great, but not bad. For starters we got the house salad and the meatballs. The salad was good, but didn't have much flavor.... then again not many salads do. Our meatballs were huge, but luke warm. There wasn't much seasoning for the beef, but they were saved by the delicious sauce they were in. It was a pallenta cheese marinara sauce, and we found ourselves eating it by the spoonful.
Finally the main courses. Annie got one of the entrees off of the specials. It was basically a lasagna overpowered with spinach with no sauce. Would not have been my first choice, and turns out not hers either, because she could not stop eating my dish. I ordered the fettuccine alfredo with chicken. Something I typically do not order at an Italian restaurant because I feel it's too plain. However, on this particular night I was craving some comfort food, and all of their pasta is freshly made in-house. The sauce was great, creamy but not soupy, and the chicken/noodles were cooked perfectly. One of the better chicken alfredos I've had, but like I said... I don't order it that much.
Overall, it was fine. I would not go back, but I also would not turn it down if I was invited by friends. It seems like a safe fallback because it's easy to get in, and they are quick (great service!). My recommendation would be to try it, but no seek it out if you have other options.
