Fig and Olive

My in laws came into town a few weekends ago and we went out to a nice dinner. They were looking after our pup while we were away so we wanted to treat them. This didn’t come easy because my father in law typically demands to pay, but this time I was able to convince him. We decided to dine at Fig and Olive as Annie had been before and it’s a neighborhood favorite in the Gold Coast.

The atmosphere to me was a little stuffy. Which isn’t out of the norm for a restaurant of this caliber and in this location. Service was good but not friendly, and sharp but not attentive. I felt at times as though we were a bother, and I’ve actually heard that from others that have visited Fig and Olive.

I thought the food was good, but did not match its price point. I’ve always said I’m willing to pay top dollar for food, but it better be fantastic. This just didn’t quite hit the mark. I got the Australian lamb chops. They were char grilled and not cooked as well as I would’ve liked. The flavor was good and I thoroughly enjoyed the sauce they arrived in. However, I feel the chefs choice of eggplant to compliment the meat was ill chosen. I enjoy eggplant, but on this occasion the vegetable’s taste and texture didn’t meet its counterpart. It was very mushy and felt flat. I feel they could’ve done more with the dish.

I didn’t try much of everyone else’s dish aside from my father in law who got the pasta. Similar to mine it was messy. An array of flavors that don’t quite go together and a reach to make a unique pasta dish.

My wife and mother in law both felt indifferent about their meals as well. Leaving an overall disappointment in a restaurant I’d been greatly looking forward to going. I would recommend against Fig and Olive based on price (very high), quality, and service. It is a beautiful restaurant and our cocktails were great, so if you do decide to visit maybe take that route.
