Queen
Nicki Minaj is one of (if not the) best female rappers of all time. I fell in love with her sound immediately when she stepped on the scene. She had this New York attitude with a quirky compliment. In her prime she was better lyrically than most MCs and I loved hearing her tear people apart. At the same time she had all of these alter egos which allowed her to explore multiple styles and have fun with hip hop. She was different (and a little crazy) which is what I loved about her. Nicki’s latest album, Queen, is a 16 track piece; which if you read my review on Drake’s new album know that decreases quality in my eyes. Let’s just say my rule still stands strong.
The album is messy, lacking focus and any real flow. It kind of blunders through hard sex talk, name dropping, and not so humble brags. At times Queen almost felt like a Lil Kim album, who I've never been a fan of. It is so interesting to me that her old music, which involved many alter egos, seemed to have more direction than this one. There was no point in which I really enjoyed the album and found myself kind of forcing my way to the end. I’m even curious if she was unsure of herself as she pushed back the release date multiple times.
It pains me to give a review like this to the Queen of hip hop but she really missed the mark on this one. I look forward to more music from her and hope she finds her sound again. I also hope she doesn’t read this and make a diss track about me.
