Malibu Wedding
I would like to start this post by saying how longggggg overdue it is. One of my closest friends from high school got married in Malibu, California in August. It was a beautiful wedding and I was honored to be in attendance. As it was a destination wedding for us, we decided to make a weekend vacation out of it and spend some time in LA while we were there. Annie's cousin lives in West Hollywood, and was a spectacular host, driving us around town and showing us all of the cool spots. We were only there for 1 day, so we of course had to fit in LOTS of eating! Below are some little blurbs about our trip! Feel free to click on the links for additional details if you want to visit!
Cofax - upon being picked up from the airport, Joe (Annie's cousin), took us to one of his favorite brunch places. Their specialty.... breakfast burritos. For those who don't know me, this is actually one of my favorite dishes! I ordered the Hot Link burrito, which was delicious. The tortilla was the perfect balance of crispy, but soft, while packing in great flavors. I felt it was a little messy, but heck it's a burrito I was ready for that. Tip for ordering, make sure to get avocado with it, and if you're not a fan of spice avoid the jalapeños.... my mouth was on fire! - 4/5
Bumsan - as we continued our LA food tour, we found ourselves at an organic ice cream shop in Korea town. This was Annie's pick, and it was fantastic! They are what I like to call very "instagrammable". The cute little shop is surrounded by bright pink walls. I would describe the ice cream as soft serve, and extremely fresh. There are only a few flavors to choose from, but many toppings and unique cones. It was a fun experience and a nice cool down from the spicy burrito, as well as the hot California temps. - 4/5
Pink's - I've been to LA many times, and never eaten at the legendary hot dog shop; so this was my pick! As expected, the line was around the corner; which ended up being a godsend, because at this point I could barely move from all the food we had just eaten. They have every topping you can imagine, and many funny tribute dogs (i.e. the Rosi O'Donnel). We all kept it very simple, while attempting not to explode from being full. I ordered the chili cheese dog, and felt it was enjoyable. Not the best hot dog I've ever had, but very good. Although Pink's looks like just a hot dog stand, they have a grand back patio with lots of seating, making it nice outdoor experience in the California sun. - 3/5
The Comedy Store - yes, we did do something other than eat. Prior to the trip, we had been kicking around ideas of what we could do at night, and Joe came up with a great one. The world famous Comedy Store is one of the first comedy clubs in the country, and has been home to some of the most legendary comics. On the particular night we went, the lineup included Dane Cook, Tom Green, and Judd Apatow; as well as some local acts. I have not really heard anything from Cook or Green since I was in high school/college, so it was a nice walk down memory lane. They both had me in stitches, and I really enjoyed their sets. However, Apatow stole the show for me. He was so funny, and kept the crowd in it the whole time. Ironically, I had just finished his book, "Sick In The Head" (don't worry, review to come), and was so excited to see him perform. As we were leaving, he was sitting in the hallway reviewing his set. I could not resist... I had to say hi. After praising him for his book and performance, we shook hands and I was on my way. Yes, I fanboyed hard haha :) - 4/5
Sugarfish - We finished our busy day with dinner. By this time we had laughed and walked off our prior eating, and were ready for more. We selected from one of their pre-fixed menus, and went through an array of rolls. I would highly recommend this route as I can confidently say it was the best sushi I've ever had. This fish was extremely fresh, and every dish was complimented by unique flavors. - 5/5
Neptune's Net - Joe, being the amazing host he is, drove us to the wedding in Malibu. One of my biggest complaints about LA, is the distance b/t everything in the city. Being >1hr away, we would have had to take a very expensive cab to get there. It was an extreme inconvenience for him, but he did it out of kind heartedness and love for his family. On our ride out, we stopped at this biker bar/restaurant. It was quite the spectacle, and sits right on the coast with views of the beach. The food was ok, but in their defense I was unable to really appreciate any food by this point (after Saturday's smorgasbord). I got the fish tacos, and was underwhelmed. The fish seemed a little overcooked, and the breading lacked any real excitement. Overall, the ambiance was the most fun! - 2.5/5
