The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
My brother in-law and his fiancé recommended us watch The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Like many shows now it is not on cable, but rather available via streaming services. Lucky for us, the majority of our friends and family have memberships to them all allowing us to watch pretty much any show ("you the real MVP") out there. Mrs. Maisel has only one season and can be viewed via Amazon.
The way I would describe The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a funnier version of Mad Men, with a greater focus on women. It takes place in the lower east side of New York during the late 1950s. The plot revolves around Miriam "Midge" Maisel who is a all American, Jewish, housewife that adores her husband. She is funny, smart, and extremely witty. Her husband on the other hand, is pretty much the exact opposite. After their marriage plunders, she finds herself on a journey to become a stand-up comic. Her jokes are crude, and unlike any humor witnessed during that time period. You follow her throughout 8 (1hr) episodes and fall more in love with her at each laugh.
I really enjoyed the show. The acting is great, and the writing is near perfect. There is no singing, but I must agree with my wife that it has some sort of "musical-esque" flow to it. It is shot beautifully, and I love all of the styles... I am enamored by the late 50s/early 60s era. I feel Mrs. Maisel is a great show for the current pulse of America with the "Me Too" movement. It is empowering and demonstrates the struggles that women went through (and still go through) in our country. Midge consistently finds herself being treated unfair, and seen different because of her sex. Her never back down attitude consistently gets her into trouble, but serves as a platform to BE YOURSELF! Although I felt the jokes were a little too vulgar at times, they still hit, and make for an hilarious piece.
In conclusion, if you liked Mad Men, you will love this. It's moves just as slow, but keeps you entertained with comedy and is less mysterious. There aren't many episodes, but you need to pay attention (not background entertainment). There are a lot of characters, and a ton of dialogue. I found myself rewinding multiple times (even starting episodes over) because I missed something. The new season is said to be done and I'm greatly looking forward to it. Just hope my brother-in-law maintained his Amazon membership :)
