Creed II
Being from Philadelphia, the Rocky series is a right of passage. I have seen each one multiple times, and love them all (some more than others). When they decided to continue the series with the concept of Creed, I felt it was a brilliant idea. Sylvester Stallone can't just keep fighting people at 72, and incorporating Apollo's son was a fresh take on the boxing classic. The latest installation, Creed II, does not disappoint, and places it atop my favorite movies this year.
For those that have not seen Creed I, it will be helpful, but not necessary. If you have not seen any of the Rocky's, shame on you, and get a refresher with the first and fourth ones. Essentially, all you need to understand is Adonis Creed (Michael B Jordan) is the son of Apollo, who fought Rocky in the initial story. As an up in coming boxer, he hopes to create a name for himself and escape his father's shadow. Creed II spices things up by bringing in some familiar Russian faces. Drago and his son serve as the dark, cold antagonists. Adonis looks to not only cement himself as a great fighter, but avenge his father's death.
Like most Rocky films, the plot is a little cheesy, and there's a bit of predictability. But overall, I can confidently say Creed II is one of the best in the series. In a recent interview, Tessa Thompson (Creed's love interest) described the film as a love story, which she compared to the original Rocky storyline. I couldn't agree more. Of course there are fighting scenes, and some graphic content (amazing boxing cinematography), but it doesn't control the movie There is a lot of substance in Creed II, and the acting is the best it's ever been. Michael B Jordan transforms before your very eyes, both emotionally and physically. He gets bigger and stronger from the start of the movie to the end (cue training sequence). A great commitment and performance by the young, rising actor. The story is a roller coaster, taking you through twists and turns, and even providing with some unexpected plot twists. Creed II takes you into a full circle for the entire series and it's beautiful. I was ugly crying by the end, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. There are great messages presented throughout the movie, giving credit to superior directing and writing.
As discussed earlier, I am extremely bias toward any Rocky-related movie. That being said, I truly believe Creed II is the best film of the year (so far, that I've seen). Top to bottom it checks all the boxes and is gripping from start to finish. The movie doesn't drag, and wraps up all loose ends, giving a complete feeling. I don't know how they could continue the series, but also don't know why they wouldn't with all of it's success. Being a huge fan, I can only hope there is more to come :) Please refer to my rankings of the series below (yes I'm a nerd).
