Ready Player One
Ready Player One released last year and received a lot of buzz as Spielberg's return to directing. Yes, I am extremely late to the party, but I felt it necessary to provide a review because of the impact it had on me. When the trailer first released, I felt it looked a little hokie and over-animated. I couldn't have been more wrong. The film shattered all of my expectations, and actually became one of my favorites of all time.
The movie takes place in a post-apocalyptic future. A video game has become both an escape for society, as well as a chance for a better life. The creator of the Oasis (video game), as they call it, has died. Upon his passing, he implements a contest rewarding the winner with all of his royalties and stock. The story follows Wade (Tye Sheridan) and his crew as they search for clues and battle evil corporate bullies to win the grand prize.
I can't speak more highly of this movie. It is a fun, fantastic ride; highlighted by 80s references, plot twists, and great special effects. The return of the buddy film, Ready Player One finds a way to check all boxes: action, comedy, romance, and drama. It does a great job of balancing CGI with reality, making it relatable for everyone. Call it nostalgia, but I found myself mesmerized the entire film, and never wanting it to end.
