Green Book

Unlike BlacKkKlansman, I went into Green Book with low expectations.  The controversy surrounding the film has been less than flattering, and created a negative aura for me.  If you have not heard about any of these, please just go see the film.  My pre-emptive expectations created anxiety and prevented me from enjoying the film the way I should have.  Green Book is a wonderful, true story, with great messages.

In the 1960s America, a "green book" served as a way for African Americans to determine places they were welcome during the terrible times of segregation.  The movie follows Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) and his driver Tony Lip (Viggo Mortenson).  Dr. Shirley is an elegant, well renowned pianist; who decides to embark on a concert tour in the deep south.  He elects the services of Lip, a local enforcer at the Copa Cabana, who is as ill-mannered as he is opportunistic.  The two are complete opposites and have to rely on the counterpart's strengths to make it through this dangerous journey.  Through compromise and understanding, they develop a great friendship and provide a feel good story.

I loved Green Book.  I felt it tackled stereotypes, and encouraged the audience to learn from each other's differences.  In doing so, we can find balance and bring out the best in every one of us.  It is a beautiful film with terrific acting, and great music.   I compare it's style and story-type to the likes of Hidden Figures and The Help.  Mahershala Ali is quickly becoming one of my favorite actors and does not disappoint with this performance.  I enjoyed watching each character grow and felt it was an important part of the message.  The movie maintains a great flow, and kept me entertained throughout.  It was an emotional roller coaster, producing laughter, tears, and overall joy.  Like the message of Green Book, please go into it without prejudice or bias.
