Roma
Our trek to finish all the Best Picture nominees continued on Sunday when we watched Roma. The Netflix hit has been growing in popularity since being recognized by multiple award shows and film festivals. It is one of the more unique pieces of this year's selection. Shot in black and white, and spoken in a foreign language, Roma takes an open mind and patience.
The film takes place in 1970s Mexico, during a time of political turmoil. Roma follows a housemaid/nanny, and the family she takes care of. Their loyalty and innocence makes them easy to love. Without giving too much away, the journey is accompanied by struggle, losses, and danger. A slow-moving, reserved story keeps the audience entertained through empathy and bouts of suspense.
Overall, I appreciated Roma. It is the most beautiful film I have seen in the past 10 years and will be a lock for best cinematography. I found myself mesmerized by the framing and perspective of each scene. The landscapes are magnificent, and I experienced a sense of peace when watching. This true art in motion, kept me excited during a movie that is quite uneventful. Minimal dialogue and abstract story-telling, left me searching for the deeper meaning behind the film. Roma is well deserved of the credits and accolades it has received this year, but not a movie I would consider a classic. Albeit, for those who really enjoy film, I highly recommend witnessing it's wonder.
