The Favourite
We did it. Every year we try to see all of the nominees for the Academy Award's Best Picture, and every year we miss it by one or two. After watching The Favourite last night, we completed all 8 selections. It was definitely the most polarizing film we saw this year. When speaking with others, the opinions ranged from movie of the year to leaving the theatre early. With such a wide range, we were both anxious and excited.
The Favourite takes place in 18th century England and examines the legacy of Queen Anne (Olivia Coleman). With the country in the middle of political uproar, and a possible battle with France, the Queen is faced with big decisions. Only problem is the Queen is not built for these types of issues. She relies on her faithful friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) as both an advisor and a romantic companion (if you know what I mean). Now enter servant Abigail (Emma Stone), the cousin of Lady Sarah. As the film progresses, Abigail begins to show her worth and deserved place in the Queen's most inner circle. Every character has his/her own agendas, but at the end of the day you learn that royalty always rules.
As it was the last film on our list, The Favourite had to make a big splash in order to dethrone my current decision for Best Picture (see upcoming post on 2019 Academy Awards). Honestly, it didn't disappoint. With great acting, wild storylines, and the fascinating culture of the Georgian era, it had the foundation to earn the top spot. The first half of the film was captivating. I found myself intrigued by the character development, and consistently laughing at it's quiet humor. However, as it progressed, it became a little too dark and creepy. I can definitely see why some walked out of the picture early. After hanging tight until the final act, I became bored and needing the awkward sexual encounters to end. It stopped being funny, and turned rather disturbing. For those who have seen Phantom Thread, it is similar in content. Not a film I would recommend to most, but for those obsessed with history and a unique story, go for it.
