Rocket Man

I grew up a huge fan of Elton John.  My mom introduced me to his music with songs like Crocodile Rock, Philadelphia Freedom, Rocket man, and Tiny Dancer to name a few.  Hollywood appears to be on a biopic kick with yet another release of famous musicians (see Bohemian Rhapsody).

Overall, the film is good.  I really enjoyed the way the story was told, using a musical-like direction and letting some of Elton's classic songs tell his life.  Taron Egerton is spectacular.  Singing his own vocals and really capturing the character.  He is already a favorite for next years Best Actor.

The only aspect of the film that didn't sit well with me was how sad it is.  I guess all of these years seeing Elton John in wild costumes, and listening to his joyful music I thought he exuded that.  A long-time alcoholic and drug addict, who had awful parents makes for some depressing material.  Although laced with great music, the 2hr film constantly reminds you that Mr. Fantastic was a little bit of a facade.  It just goes to show that happiness is much more than fame and fortune.  Rocket Man made me grateful for all of the love and support I have in my life; and also made me respect Elton John so much more for all he accomplished.

If you are a fan of Elton John, I can't recommend this film enough.  For everyone else, it is still great; but be mindful of the length and bring some tissues.
